Public relations is an important aspect of any company in the age of social media, when a simple allegation can be turned into a truth by readers. In one pretty unfortunate event by Oracle, an employee was fired and has tried to sue the company for allegedly being racist. He claims that he was lobbying for equal pay for one Indian employee. Since Indians control a large portion of the IT market, this could be a telling blow to the technology company. Since Oracle has decided to remain quiet about the ordeal, the social media outlets have been able to run rampant with the story and it’s taken on a life of its own. However, Information Technology has the ability to protect companies from such PR disasters. In the event of a story impending, as soon as it’s been detected, the information can be given to those who are in charge. This information can be used to help the company recover from disaster and/or control the damage by putting out a quick response or a press release. While it doesn’t avoid all the bad publicity because a story does get out, there’s less rumor-mongering as customers are led to the official release.
