Google Alerts is a social media alert system that allows users to get emails based on their social networks. These alerts have traditionally followed a more standard design which resembled the search results from Google’s popular search engine page. However, they have been redesigned quite a lot, and with the increasing popularity of social media, integrated links to several different social networks have been included. It also seems to be following a design which looks more suited to mobile phones and other small displays, which makes sense as most users of the service likely check their alerts on mobile devices. Links which allow users to share alerts are also included, as well as the ability to refine the alerts. It appears that Google Alerts’ changes are designed to make the service more useful to their users, but it’s unknown whether these changes are part of a limited beta test or whether they are intended to be permanent. There are issues with one of the buttons used to repost content to Twitter, which doesn’t appear to happen with any of the other social networking channels. Google, like so many other Internet companies, are still working on the best interface for social networking.
